CHATHAM ARTS' FALL WRITERS' WORKSHOPS

PITTSBORO, NC - Writers of all levels and genres are invited to hone their skills at one or more ChathamArts Writers' Workshops this fall. Small classes led by local professional writers will cover poetry, journalism, memoir, creative non-fiction and an introduction to creative writing on selected Saturday afternoons at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro through November 18. Class space is limited and participants must register in advance at ChathamArts, 121 Hillsboro Street in Pittsboro, or by completing an online registration form at www.chathamarts.org .
Each workshop is $25 for the general public, $20 for ChathamArts members; you may take three workshops for $60; $50 for ChathamArts members. Contact: 919-542-0394, info@chathamarts.org. Workshops are from 1 to 4 p.m. on the following dates:
Sept. 9. Acclaimed fiction writer, Doris Betts will lead off with a workshop on Short Story Writing offering instruction in establishing point of view, plot, theme, and story form. Betts, the award-winning author of nine books of fiction, taught creative writing for 33 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she held a distinguished chair in the department of English. She is a winner of the Medal of Merit in short story from the Academy of Arts and Letters.
Sept. 23: Poetry with Tom Dow. This upbeat session will emphasize short narrative poems with crisp, accessible style and elements of humor. Dow, a resident of Bear Creek whose work has appeared in many publications, has an MFA in Writing from Vermont College and has taught poetry at Central Carolina Community College.
Oct. 7: Introduction to Creative Writing with Chanda Allen, who teaches English and composition at Central Carolina Community College. Allen has a master's degree in English and African American literature and a passionfor creativity and clarity. She will help you tap your imagination for more compelling writing.
Oct. 21: Journalism with Paul Cuadros. A reporter who has written for Time magazine and other major media, Cuadros is the author of "A Home on the Field," the story of the state championship Jordan Matthews High School soccer team he coached, and the challenges they overcame as immigrants in a rural community. He will cover writing styles for print and broadcast media and book-length projects, and how to approach non-fiction writing and a journalism career.
Nov. 4: First Person Singular - The Diary or Memoir, with Judy Hogan. Founder of Carolina Wren Press and author of five poetry books and two prose works, Hogan will help you start a journal and dig deep for stories that provide enlightenment and meaning. Her extensive diaries can be found in the Special Collections at Duke University Library. Hogan lives in Moncure and teaches at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh.
Nov. 18: Creative Non-Fiction with Marjorie Hudson.
Writing exercises
and short readings from great works of creative non-fiction will help
you get started writing from imagination and memory. Hudson, who lives
near Pittsboro, is the author of "Searching for Virginia Dare,"
a finalist for the Sherwood Anderson Award. She is working on a novel
about the changing rural landscape and a memoir about her father.
